LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — Guests at the Venetian Hotel & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip were left frustrated when several slot machines were out of order or requiring manual cash payouts on Friday. This incident coincided with a massive cybersecurity attack that has impacted the properties of MGM Resorts International, the parent company of the Venetian.

According to reports, guests had to wait for extended periods of time for attendants to address the issues with the slot machines. Attendants at the Venetian attributed the problem to a “system-wide upgrade.” However, it later became apparent that the slot machine outage was not related to a cyber attack but a brief technical issue.

The Venetian released a statement clarifying the situation and stating that the outage was not cyber-related. They assured guests that the slot machines had been restored and that they were working with those affected.

News reports indicated that approximately 50 slot machines were out of service during the incident. The Venetian is owned by Vici Properties and operated by Apollo Global Management.

The incident at the Venetian occurred amidst a cybersecurity issue affecting MGM Resorts International. The company confirmed that their systems were impacted by a cyber attack and that they are working with law enforcement to protect their data. As a precaution, specific systems were shut down to safeguard the company’s information.

In a related incident, Caesars Entertainment recently experienced a major data breach that exposed the driver’s license and social security numbers of its customers. This breach was disclosed in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

These incidents highlight the growing threat of cyber attacks in the hospitality industry. As the industry relies heavily on technology to deliver services and manage operations, it becomes an attractive target for cybercriminals. It is crucial for hotels, resorts, and casinos to continuously update their cybersecurity measures and implement robust systems to protect guest information and maintain the security of their operations.

Guests who visit these establishments should also remain vigilant and take steps to protect their personal information. This includes using strong and unique passwords, refraining from sharing sensitive information over unsecured networks, and monitoring their financial statements for any suspicious activity.

As cyber attacks continue to pose a significant threat to the hospitality industry, it is imperative for businesses and guests alike to prioritize cybersecurity and take necessary precautions to mitigate potential risks. With the right measures in place, the industry can continue to provide safe and enjoyable experiences for guests without compromising their personal information or the integrity of their operations.
