Global Authorities Unite to Bolster Ukraine’s Crypto Crime Fight

by Janine Lindsey

The United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands have joined forces to support Ukraine law enforcement in combating the escalating issue of crypto crime in the country. The collaboration involved virtual training sessions that equipped Ukrainian law enforcement with the necessary tools to tackle money laundering, analyze fraudulent cryptocurrency transactions, and improve the efficiency of blockchain forensic investigations.

The joint effort included the US Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigation (CI), the Dutch Fiscal Information and Investigation Service (FIOD), and the United Kingdom’s His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The goal was to assist Ukrainian law enforcement officers in addressing crypto and blockchain fraud, with approximately 40 officers participating in their second round of training focused on blockchain tracing.

This recent session continued the partnership established in May between the CI and Chainalysis, which concentrated on cybersecurity for Ukrainian authorities. To aid in the training, blockchain analytics firms CipherTrace and BlockTrace also joined CI, FIOD, and HMRC. This collaboration and education aim to enhance the capabilities of Ukrainian authorities in conducting investigations related to financial crimes.

According to Chainalysis data, the proportion of all crypto activity associated with illicit actions nearly doubled from 0.12% in 2021 to 0.24% in 2022. This emphasizes the growing concern regarding crypto crime globally, including in Ukraine. The collaboration between international law enforcement agencies and blockchain analytics firms plays a crucial role in curbing such illegal activities.

In recent times, Ukraine has seen a surge in crypto crime, prompting the involvement of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in collaboration with Ukrainian authorities. These joint efforts resulted in the crackdown on nine suspected money laundering crypto exchanges on May 5. The investigations revealed the extensive involvement of these exchanges in illicit financial activities.

Additionally, authorities uncovered a major pyramid scheme operating under the guise of an investment project called “Life is Good.” The perpetrators defrauded over a thousand victims, accumulating approximately $40 million through false promises of high returns on investments.

The actions taken by international law enforcement agencies, such as the FBI and the collaborative efforts of the United States, the United Kingdom, and the Netherlands, illustrate their dedication to combatting crypto crime. By training and equipping Ukrainian authorities, it enables them to enhance their effectiveness in tackling financial crimes within their jurisdiction.

It is essential to address the rise in crypto crime as it poses significant risks to the financial system and individuals worldwide. Through continued collaboration, information sharing, and improved investigative techniques, law enforcement agencies can stay one step ahead of criminals in the crypto space.
